Let me start by confessing an error made in last week’s sports page. I went to see MEPS play the day before deadline, so I could report the results, but I inserted that information in the wrong spaces on the page. As a result, the MEPS players were cited as playing for the 54th. I made corrections on the Web site immediately.
This is what really happened: The May 15 doubleheader saw the MEPS team win two over 58th, with Daniel Gore opening the first game with a three-run homer, and Donnie Graham following soon after with a solo shot.
OK, moving on:
PMO split a pair of games with ALMC, May 16, while 108th managed a win, 11-1 over MEPS before rain called off the last game. CASCOM beat up 530th at Nowak Stadium, 17-6 and 11-10. ALMC split a pair with 262nd on Monday, while the Marines shut down 108th, 23-0 and 13-4.
PMO added two wins over 506th, 8-7 and 16-7. The 240th team entered the win column this week, defeating 111th, 17-15, 7-6. MEPS earned a pair of wins over Kenner.
CASCOM kept their streak intact with a win over 58th, 14-2, until the 58th closed the doubleheader with a 12-11 win. CASCOM still leads the intramural league with three wins over the second place MEPS team, who’ve earned five straight victories in recent outings.
The 262nd earned two wins (22-5, 12-9) over 54th Wednesday, to improve 8-4 for the season.
The ALMC team clearly had better at-bats Tuesday against 530th. But after stringing together two strong innings of timely walks and support from coach Manuel Marrero’s three-run blast, the 530th stole the game away, 11-8.
Defensively, Kelvis Tormes provided good base coverage at first and second, but it was Marcus Hinton who recorded the elusive “ESPN moment” when he made a diving grab at the ball for a miracle out that would have easily been an extra-base hit for ALMC.
Unfortunately, I was on the wrong side of the field at the moment and didn’t capture it on camera, but check out other photos, scores and standings on the Web at www.fortleetraveller.com.
