FORT LEE, Va. (Nov. 27, 2013) -- Name: Spc. Xavier Brown

Unit: 54th Quartermaster Company, Special Troops Battalion, 82nd Sustainment Brigade

MOS: 25B – information technology specialist

Age: 23

Time in service: four and a half years

Hometown: Trenton, N.J.

Family: girlfriend

Individual strengths: “I’m honest and loyal.”

Individual weaknesses: “I care too much. I tend to make someone else’s problem my problem.”

Pastimes: “I ride my motorcycle, I catch up on my boxing and jujitsu.”

Pet peeves: “I have a problem with people who don’t upkeep their appearance.”

Worst fear: “Being blind or deaf.”

Favorite music artist: “(The rapper) Kanye West – he’s like me.”

Talent: “I have a smart mouth. I look at it like this: if I see stupid, I’m going to call out stupid. I don’t have a filter when it comes to some situations. Some people don’t need tact because when you sugar-coat something, they’re not really going to learn. It’s sometimes better if you tell it like it is.”

One person you most admire: “My mom. She was a single mom who raised my brother and me. She made it work. She was a great example.”

Talk about your childhood: “The biggest value I had growing up is honesty; I was taught to take care of the people who take care of you. My dad wasn’t big on us having friends because why do you need friends when you have family?”

Why you joined the Army: “I thought it would help build my resume as a police officer.”

Did the Army fulfill your expectations?: “It’s not what I thought it was going to be. I thought it would be war-type things. I didn’t think I would be behind a computer all day. I was looking for a bit more action.”

What it means to be a Soldier: “I’m not saying we’re better than others, but our expectations are higher. We’re not super heroes, but we do defend the country’s freedoms. I don’t even know you, but I’m choosing to protect your freedoms.”

You haven’t been deployed. What are your thoughts about getting the opportunity one day?: “I want to do it, but I keep getting the bad end of the stick. Everywhere I go, I’m never in the deployment picture.”

Some of the qualities you like in leaders?: “I actually like that when you have an issue, I go to them. No matter what the situation, they will help. That’s something they instilled in me and something I push down to my subordinates.”

Some of the qualities you like in your fellow Soldiers: “I like to know the go-getters. I like to see them do good but not better than me (Brown said he’s a very competitive person).”

Future plans: “I want to build my resume. I want my enlisted records brief to look nice and stacked up like an E-7’s, so I try to earn awards, get college credits and technical certifications. Personally, I want to get into politics when I get out of the military. I want to be a political figure in my home state.”
