FORT LEE, Va. (Oct. 4, 2012) -- Name: Bobby Brown

Hometown: Refugio, Texas

Family: married with two children

Where he works: Army Community Service

Job title: program specialist

Time on the Job: two years

What the job entails: Supporting each of the different sections within ACS and assisting the ACS director.

How does your job impact the installation? “My job – and ACS as a whole – effects the bottom line basics of any military member, retiree or spouse coming onto this installation for the first time. This is their first stop for information. If we can’t help you, we will refer you to the person or agency that can.”

How do you stay upbeat about your job? “The biggest reward for me is that I see what we do as positive in that military member’s life, and I can put myself on the other side. I was military, so I know what they’re going through. I don’t care if they’re Navy, Air Force or Marine Corps – I know what they’re going through as an E-1 or as a senior military member.”

The most demanding part of your job: “Staying on top of the next event.”

What you like most about your job: “I love people when they come in, and we can assist them and send them out of here with a smile on their faces. It’s rewarding when we get a person in here who is financially strapped, his car is broke down, etc., and they come in and say, ‘Mr. Brown, we need help. Who can you point me to?’”

Your definition of a successful employee: “An employee who is given the tools and given the leeway to accomplish the job and who has a great supervisor behind him.”

How you define success: “The little things like a smile, but that’s just me. I like to see people happy and see that day-in and day-out. If I can say I helped someone at the end of the day, that makes it worth it to get up in the morning and come in here.”

What you can’t live without: “My Family.”

The most influential force in your life: “My football coaches. They told me that life might be tough, but you can pick yourself up. If you get knocked down, get back up. Anyone can lie down, but it takes a strong person to get up and get knocked down again.”

Favorite quote: “If you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything.”

Favorite TV show: “‘Star Trek.’ I’m a Trekki, and I believe in the future.”

Favorite place to vacation: “Spain.”

Worst fear: “Failing to plan.”

Pet Peeve: “Do what you say you’re going to do.”

The quality in people that you admire: “Straight-forward honesty. It’s important to me because there’s no reason to be untruthful. We’re all human, and we’re all struggling to do the same thing on this planet. Things would be a lot better if people understood that.”

What you want people to know about you: “That I am a hard-working person, that I’m honest and that I’ll do anything I can to try to assist you.”
