Last summer, Kenner Army Health Clinic instituted a new customer service award. The CARES Award (Compassionate, Attentive, Responsive, and Enthusiastic Service) is available to any staff member – military, civil service or contractor.

The CARES Award’s intent is to foster the team concept and reduce perceived differences in staff categories. Winners and nominees are recognized at the monthly award ceremony and announce the winner. Several Kenner employees have received the award by making significant contributions to Kenner.

Derenda Lovelace, Kenner’s medical management nurse consultant, accepted the challenge of assisting an Active-Duty family member whose father is deployed to Iraq with two special needs children. The mother was in the process of establishing respite care and in great need of a break. The family lives off-post and does not have family or friends in the area. Lovelace knew of the family through case management, and offered her personal nursing care assistance to let the mother get away for a short time. Lovelace went on her own time to the family’s home and took care of the children. The mother arranged to go to Germany over the holidays to visit her family and needed transportation to and from the airport. Lovelace picked the family up at their home, took them to the airport, and assisted with the children with boarding until the plane departed. She also returned after New Year’s Day and picked them up, drove them home and helped settle the children in for the night. Lovelace’s caring demeanor personifies the true meaning of the CARES Service Award.

Another outstanding Kenner employee and recipient of the CARES Award is Pierre Lewis, optometry technician. A patient called the eye clinic and told Lewis he was having vision problems in his right eye. After triaging the patient’s symptoms, Lewis was able to get the patient an appointment to be seen that afternoon, and just hours later, the patient was having laser eye surgery in Richmond to repair the retina that had two small and one large tear. Lewis’s attention to detail and caring attitude allowed him to gain the trust and confidence of this patient.
