Col. Jason P. Affolder, 23rd Quartermaster Brigade commander, speaks to Petroleum and Water Department Soldiers and administrators following the annual 14th QM Detachment Moment of Silence Ceremony Tuesday in PWD’s Guest Auditorium. The event was moved indoors due to inclement weather. The tribute honors 13 detachment members who died during a Feb. 25, 1991, Iraqi missile attack on unit barracks in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Forty-three others from the Greensburg, Pa., water purification unit were wounded. The hostile action killed a total of 29 Soldiers and wounded 99. Affolder said the event is a reminder of the sacrifices we make as members of the military: “They weren’t just making water, they were serving their nation,” he said during the solemn occasion.
