Boy Scouts Retire Unserviceable Flags

Fort Lee Boy Scout Troop 912 conducted a flag retirement ceremony in December. The Scouts had collected more than 70 old and unserviceable flags from the community over the past year.

The Scouts prepared the flags at the Scout Hut by cutting the flags up by stripes and star field and separating the colors. The next morning, the Scouts brought all of the flag pieces out to a fire place in the Scout field behind the Scout Hut.

During the ceremony all parts of the flag are burned with dignity in an open fire. After the ceremony the Scouts collected and separated the ashes and grommets and buried them separately, at an undisclosed location. Troop 912 conducts this ceremony once a year as part of their service to the Fort Lee community.
