The Fort Lee Family Child Care Program recognized Maxine Dixon, the first Fort Lee provider to receive home accreditation. Col. Gwen Bingham, U.S. Army Garrison, Fort Lee commander, presented Dixon with a commander’s coin for her accomplishment.

Accreditation is earned through a process to assure quality standards are met by the candidates. These include the observer visit, candidate self-certification, parent surveys and staff verification of records, certificates and other related documents. Latanya Wagstaff, FCC program director, said that a lengthy mentorship is also part of the process. Accreditation is earned through the National Association for Family Child Care. Dixon, who has been in the child care field for more than 15 years, said that as a provider, there is no higher achievement than receiving accreditation.

“This means a lot to me because it was a big milestone completed,” said Dixon. “It’s the highest recognition there is in child care and it has always been a goal of mine.”
