FORT LEE, Va. (July 30, 2009) – Boy Scout Brandon Goodwyn, his mother, Tina, and Lauren Bands Sr., Colonial Heights Veterans of Foreign Wars Robert E. Lee Post No. 2239 member and Memorial Walk project chairman, waited patiently for over three hours to address the Colonial Heights City Council on July 14.
Council chambers were full with most citizens present to hear the latest proposal on what should be done with the vacated Colonial Heights Baptist Church on the south side of the city.
Goodwyn, of Troop 178, was mentored by Bands for the occasion. They rehearsed for the moment when Goodwyn could earn his Eagle Scout by successfully completing a community project.
Goodwyn presented a professional Eagle Scout project proposal to council members to authorize the Colonial Heights VFW Robert E. Lee Post No. 2239 to establish a Veterans’ Memorial Walk of engraved bricks with names of honored veterans to be part of the Colonial Heights War Memorial.
Goodwyn provided a 22-page bound copy of his presentation to all council members, explaining the project in detail. Upon conclusion asked for the council members’ approval. Council members were impressed with the detail of Goodwyn’s presentation and unanimously approved the project. The brick project will be completed at no cost to the city and maintained by VFW Robert E. Lee Post No. 2239.
The unveiling of the Colonial Heights War Memorial is scheduled during the ceremonies on Veterans Day Nov. 11.
