Members of Team Lee are always up to a challenge, especially when it supports a worthy cause.
Staff Sgt. Jonathan Ward, 217th Military Police Detachment, assembled a Team Lee bike team to ride the American Diabetes Association Eastern North Carolina tour, June 9-10. Team Lee exceeding their own goal by raising $2,800 for the “Tour de Cure” event, and biked a total of 975 miles. Ward became interested in competitive biking through his father-in-law several years ago, and both have been active in charitable bike tours. Ward participated in the Tour de Cure last season solo, not having been on post long enough to draw interest in a team effort.
For Ward, raising funds for diabetes hits close to home. He lost his grandfather this past April to diabetes, which motivated him to exert all of his effort in this year’s tour.
“It really gave me motivation to contribute more, and put a team together,” said Ward. “This far surpassed my expectations, and felt real good doing it.”
The team trained for the event two months out, riding 75-mile stretches every weekend leading up to the tour date.
Ward plans on participating in several other bike events this year, and is always looking to add members to Team Lee. Riders interested in joining can call (804) 734-4342.
