Two 49th Quartermaster Group Soldiers will take on the best of their 101st Airborne Division counterparts, as ‘The Screaming Eagles’ holds its Soldier and noncommissioned officer of the quarter competition this week at Fort Campbell, Ky.
Sgt. Michael Maggio, 267th QM Company, 240th QM Battalion; and Spc. Alexander Potgeter, Headquarters, Headquarters Company; are representing the 49th in a contest that will determine the 101st’s representative at the U.S. Army Forces Command.
That winner will compete at Department of the Army Soldier and NCO of the Year Competition to be held this year at Fort Lee.
This is the first time 49th Soldiers have competed at Fort Campbell, headquarters of the division nicknamed ‘The Screaming Eagles,’ since becoming aligned with the 101st eight months ago. It previously competed under Fort Lee’s U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command.
Maggio, a power generation equipment repairer due for promotion, earned the right to compete in the competition via a battalion promotion board held earlier this month. He said he is proud to represent the 49th and looks forward to the competition.
“It’s an honor,” said the St. Louis, Mo., native. “It feels good. I was never able to do something like this in my last unit. It gives me the opportunity to go out there to prove myself and support my unit.”
The 25-year-old Maggio said he will go up against 15-20 Soldiers representing the 101st’s home units, and that he isn’t intimidated.
“They’re just like me,” said the four-year Soldier. “Not being scared and being focused will be the key to winning,” he said.
The Soldier and NCO of the year competition features a board appearance along with a day and night land navigation course, a written and hands-on Warrior Tasks and Drills event and Army Physical Fitness Test.
