Vet Facility Schedules Walk-in Wellness Day

The Fort Lee Veterinary Treatment Facility will host a walk-in Wellness Day on Aug. 22, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m., in building 11025, 38th Street. All services will be performed outdoors for the protection of staff and clients.

Available animal care includes wellness exams, vaccines, microchips, and heartworm and fecal tests. Those not registered in the system will need to bring their pet’s vaccination records and other pertinent medical information.

Sustainers’ Pub Reopens

Family and MWR has reopened the Sustainers’ Pub in the lobby area of the Holiday Inn Express hotel on Fort Lee, 2301 Mahone Ave.

There is limited indoor dining and carryout service Monday-Thursday, 8-10 p.m., and Friday-Saturday, 8-11 p.m., and Sunday, 8-10 p.m.

Seminar Introduces Career Skills Program

A free virtual Army Career Skills Program Seminar will be held Aug. 20, 10 a.m. - noon.

The national ACSP provides free job coaching, licensure and credentialing, job placement and more. Participants will learn about area resources for improving job skills and have networking opportunities with a group of technology enterprises and colleges. The seminar is for transitioning service members, veterans and spouses. It is hosted by the Soldier for Life Transition Assistance Program.

DeCA Survey Can Fetch Immediate Response

Commissary shoppers can now ask questions and get direct responses within 72 hours when they fill out their Defense Commissary Agency purchaser survey.

To access the customer satisfaction questionnaire, visit mydeca.me/receipt (address printed at the bottom of purchase receipts). Shoppers are asked to complete the survey within seven days of the purchase.

DeCA encourages customers to share feedback to help improve shopping experiences.

Signup Underway for CG Golf Scramble

Registration continues for a CG Golf Scramble set for Aug. 21 at the Cardinal Golf Club.

This captain’s choice competition will have optional tee times ranging from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. The fee is $35 for members and $50 for all others. This includes greens fees, a cart, a box lunch, prizes and more.

SFL-TAP Announces August Resume Workshop

The Soldier for Life Transition Assistance Program will host a free virtual resume-writing workshop Aug. 25, 9 a.m. - noon. 

It is open to all transitioning military members, spouses, family members and DOD civilians. Participants will receive tips on fine-tuning objectives, crafting work history, showcasing skills and more.

Entry Window Open for Student Essay Contest

The Virginia War Memorial is seeking student entries for its 5th annual Veterans Day Essay Contest.

The topic is “An American Who Served in the Military During World War II Who InspiresMe.”  The subject can be a member of their family, the local community or a famous man or woman who served in any branch of the armed forces. Essays should be 500-750 words and submitted by 11:59 p.m., Oct. 11. The contest is open to middle and high school public, private and homeschooled students in Virginia. Winners will be chosen from two age groups.

Lewis Ginter Features ‘Flowers After 5’

Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden hosts Flowers After 5 outdoor concerts on Thursday evenings through Sept. 24, 5-9 p.m., at 1800 Lakeside Ave., Richmond.

On Aug. 13, Paul Urban and Friends and Ken Von Kellner will perform. Visitors also can walk through the gardens, taste wine, view displays, participate in family activities and more. Leashed pets are permitted on the second and fourth Thursdays. Tickets are online only. The facility follows COVID-19 protocols and requires masks inside and strongly recommends them outside.
