PWD Wins Intramural Basketball Championship
PWD’s Kenneth Johnson keeps the ball in play during the finals.

PWD got serious March 19 at MacLaughlin Fitness Center as the season-ending tournament put them against the rival that handed them their only loss this season — the 49th. Two games later, PWD emerged the champions.

Closing the regular intramural basketball season undefeated, the PWD team took their first beating in the postseason with a 37-36 loss over the 49th team. They resurfaced in the finals with a 39-30 win over 267th, a 41-21 win over 109th and a 50-36 win over 266th. The 49th beat 266th earlier March 15, 33-27, to claim their spot in the finals.

PWD gained a six-point advantage in the first game going into the half, never losing the lead en route to a 67-40 win.

Kenneth Johnson scored a game-high 20 points for the victors and Anthony Rhoades recorded 18. Aaron Barfield led the 49th with 10 points and Derrick Grant scored 9.

The intensity of the final game was highlighted not only by the close 15-14 edge the 49th gained going into second half, but by the two minute scoring drought as both team battled a 9-9 tie.

PWD’s Robert Jones scored 11 points, and Jay Twitty recorded 10 of his 12 points in the final 15 minutes to earn the win, 45-36, and the championship.

For the 49th, Homer Rose posted a team-high 12 points, and Barfield and Therman Brown both contributed nine points apiece.
